What does it mean to surrender to God?
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned throughout my spiritual journey is, that when we let go and surrender to God, our life becomes much easier. When I surrendered to God’s plan, I felt happier than I ever imagined with the way my life was going. I realized how silly I was thinking that I knew what was best for me better than God!
When your plan aligns with God’s plan, that’s when the magic happens. It feels like you’re flowing effortlessly throughout your life journey, and you start manifesting things easily. Instead of swimming against the current, you start going with the flow of life!
In my spiritual journey, I had read a lot about what it means to surrender to God. I wanted to surrender to God because I understood that it was in my best interest. However, it was extremely difficult to let go of my desires and the plan I had made for myself.
Things were not working out the way I wanted. The more I tried to force things into a direction to fit ‘my plan’, the more I suffered. At times, I was aware that I was going against God’s plan for me, and I refused to surrender to God’s will.
My ego was very stubborn. Even though I was aware that refusing to surrender to God inflicts suffering, I resisted and refused to surrender. Until I gave up at some point. I was mentally, emotionally and spiritually exhausted. I felt like I was swimming against a strong current, so I decided to let go.
When I decided to surrender to God and let go of my plans, life started working out for me. It felt like I had closed a chapter and started a new one where everything seemed to work out smoothly and effortlessly.
How to surrender to God and let go
We’ve established how magical your life gets when you surrender to God and let go of your plans. So now you might be asking ‘how do you surrender to God?’
By letting go of your egoic desires, tapping into your intuition, and allowing yourself to be guided.
To surrender to God does not mean that you stop everything that you are doing and wait for things to happen by themselves. It does not mean that you give up on trying, and feel demotivated. It’s completely natural and healthy to have goals, desires and plans. That means that you are motivated and have a vision for your life.
But it’s important that the vision that you have for yourself is in line with God’s vision for you. To understand God’s plan for you, you need to let your Creator guide you.
And how do you surrender to God’s will and let go of your egoic desires?
7 Steps to surrender to God
The following 7 steps will help you surrender to God completely and establish authentic goals in line with your soul purpose.
1. Surrender to God through prayer
To surrender to God and let go, you need strength and guidance as it’s not always clear to understand God’s plan for you. Through prayer, you can ask for strength to overcome your egoic desires, attachments, and beliefs which no longer serve you. You can also pray for guidance and clarity when your mind feels clouded during challenging times.

2. Be mindful of your thoughts
Most often our minds are clouded with worries, doubts and fears which make us feel like we are lost in our own darkness. Our fears and worries make it harder to surrender to God as we stay stuck in our comfort zone instead of choosing the path of personal and spiritual growth. Like every other discipline in life, we must practice mindfulness and learn how to become aware of our negative thoughts.
Practicing mindful meditation and breathwork exercises enhance self-awareness and help you become more mindful of your thoughts. During mindful meditation you focus on the present moment instead of dwelling on the past or future. Learn more about how you can use meditation to deal with anxiety and negative thoughts.
3. Having faith and trusting completely in God
To surrender yourself completely to God, it usually takes risks and requires you to step out of your comfort zone.
We see this even in the Bible Genesis 22:1-24 where God tests Abraham with the ultimate surrender test to sacrifice his son Isaac. God blesses those who obediently surrender everything and follow God’s will.
When you follow your intuition and take a leap of faith, God rewards you with blessings.
4. Letting go of the need to control
Letting go of the need to control is one of the hardest things to do as we do not like feeling vulnerable. We are under the impression that if we control things, we avoid suffering and everything goes our way.
But in reality, we cannot control what is outside of us and thus we create more suffering. We can only control how we react to things, how we think and how we feel. By strengthening our faith in God, we will find it easier to let go and trust completely in our Creator.
When we surrender to God and let go, we feel relieved and a sense of freedom. Even though it sounds scary, it’s extremely liberating as it frees our mind from negative thinking, doubts and speculative fear.

5. Spend time in nature
Spending time in nature helps us feel more connected to God. It’s extremely beneficial to go for a walk in nature especially after a long day at work or in a closed environment.
Contemplative walking, sitting down quietly in nature, watching the sunset or the sunrise etc…have a calming effect on our entire being. Psychologically we feel better, and even spiritually.
By connecting to nature, you are connecting to God, our Creator. Meditating in nature is also a powerful exercise where you can experience moments of realization and receive intuitive guidance.

6. Journal you journey
Journaling is a highly beneficial exercise that improves your quality of life. It helps you become in touch with your emotions and your thoughts, while making connections with life circumstances and possible triggers.
Sometimes we feel overwhelmed with life and our own emotions. Writing down your story and how you are feeling helps you clear your head as you put everything on paper. By organizing your thoughts and releasing overwhelming feelings, you can experience moments of clarity and realization.
With a calmer mind and a clearer vision, it becomes easier for you to surrender to God, let go, and establish goals which are true to your authentic self. Journaling your story also helps you to achieve these goals once established.
7. Seek spiritual guidance
To surrender to God and let go completely, it is truly challenging and requires self-discipline, support, and guidance.
Seeking guidance from God, your higher self, and from a spiritual guide can support you and help you throughout your life journey and challenging situations. Sometimes it’s difficult to understand God’s will, and most often we fail to see the bigger picture.
This is God’s way of testing our faith and trust in our Creator. Letting go and trusting in God during times of uncertainty can feel quite scary. You might feel like you cannot see the light and that darkness, fear and worry consume your mind. Remember that God never leaves you and is always with you.
A spiritual guide can support you and help you discover your life purpose by pointing out underlying issues which might not be clear to you. These underlying beliefs inhibit you from reaching your potential and keep you stuck in a loop where you feel unfulfilled with your life choices.
What are the benefits of humbly surrendering to God?
When you surrender to God and let go of your plans, you realize that God knows what’s best for you. We have ideas in our heads about what we need, and we have false identities and attachments that lead us to chasing the wrong goals.
If you keep chasing egoic goals, you realize that nothing brings you fulfillment. Your ego sometimes can trick you into thinking that you are following God’s plan when in reality you are serving the ego.
Achievements bring about temporary satisfaction, but when you surrender to God’s will, your heart is filled with joy and fulfillment.
